Born in Switzerland, Gil went with his parents to South Africa when a small child. With Wyn (son Mark and daughter Nina) they came to New Zealand in 1976. After a short fellowship in Switzerland, the family moved to Dunedin in May 1978. Gil became Head of Gastroenterology at Dunedin Hospital, and Mary Glendinning Professor of Medicine in the Dunedin School of Medicine and University of Otago. He has a number of added interests, including his links with the Roslyn (now Highgate) Presbyterian Church, where he has been an elder for about 25 years, wood sculpture, and walking and running in the bush around Dunedin. Gil retired from his University and Hospital posts at the end of 2003. He still practises as a consultant gastroenterologist once a week, and takes part in some academic, teaching and research activities at a local and national level. Recently he and Wyn went to work in a children’s home in Madagascar, an experience which has stimulated further interest in helping the poor and underprivileged. Gil sees himself as a stimulator of ideas and a team person, so he hopes to find ways of making himself useful as part of an outward looking mission team. <p/&
